The October 2018 4A polls picked Plainview's girls and Byng's boys. The state meet picked Kingfisher's girls and Seminole's boys.

Every few years the 4A polls achieve something remarkable: they miss everything. The October 7th, 2018 ballots had Plainview’s girls and Byng’s boys on top. Neither won. Neither even finished second. When the poll goes 0-for-2 on champions, it’s not a ranking — it’s a guess with letterhead.

Girls’ poll, October 7th: Plainview, Metro Christian, Kingfisher, Lincoln Christian, Pauls Valley. State: Kingfisher 86, Plainview 92. The champion was the poll’s No. 3, and the poll’s No. 1 had to settle for runner-up — six points short of its own prediction.

Boys’ poll, October 7th: Byng, St. Mary, Weatherford, Lincoln Christian, Seminole. State: Seminole 81, Mt. St. Mary 88. The champion was the poll’s No. 5. The runner-up was the poll’s No. 2. The poll’s No. 1, Byng, isn’t on the podium at all. That’s a full-house miss — wrong winner, and the actual winner was an afterthought on the ballot.

Weatherford’s Kennadi Price won the girls’ individual title; Madill’s Miguel Duran won the boys’ crown.

2018 4A: the poll missed both champions. Somewhere a ballot is still insisting Byng looked great in October — and October doesn’t hand out trophies.
